Sky doubles spending on new shows to £1bn a year



British broadcaster Sky has vowed to double its spending on making new programmes to £1 billion per yearBritish broadcaster Sky has vowed to double its spending on making new programmes to £1 billion per year.The company – which was bought by US giant Comcast for £30 billion last year – said it would also launch a new pan-European arm called Sky Studios.

It comes after hit drama Chernobyl attracted 3.4 million viewers and became the firms most successful production ever. Other successes have included Patrick Melrose starring Benedict Cumberbatch, which won two Bafta awards, while highly anticipated shows coming up later this year include Catherine The Great starring Helen Mirren (pictured).

Sky said it will also supply programming to Comcast-owned sister organisations NBC and Universal Pictures.The broadcaster is gearing up to fight off competition from Netflix, Amazon and a string of new streaming services preparing to launch.Jeremy Darroch, Skys boss, said: This is a transformational development for us.
